Dr. Daniel L. Santa Maria

Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine, and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine

Daniel L. Santa Maria, M.D. completed his undergraduate and medical education at the University of Kansas before moving to San Antonio for his residency and fellowship training through the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and CHRISTUS Santa Rosa. Upon the completion of his residency, he received the Earl C. Elkins Award, an honor presented annually to the resident with the highest national Board exam score in his specialty.

Dr. Santa Maria is currently Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine, and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine.

Prior to working with SportsMedSA, Dr. Santa Maria served as faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He remains active in research at both at the Health Science Center and with SportsMedSA. He has coauthored chapters in medical text books on amputee care, pain management and sports concussions.

Dr. Santa Maria has been voted one of San Antonio’s “Top Doctors” and one of the “Best Doctors in America.” His sports coverage experience includes high school and college football, the Rock N’ Roll Marathon and the San Antonio Rampage.

Dr. Santa Maria specializes in the treatment of sports injuries including concussion management and injuries to the spine and upper and lower extremities. He performs electromyography (EMG) studies for the diagnosis of conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and peripheral neuropathy.

As a rehabilitation physician, he has experience in caring for patients with chronic neuromuscular weakness. This includes stroke patients as well as patients with multiple sclerosis, polio, amputations and spinal cord injuries.
